The Social Web Wine Words of the WeekThe Missoula Floods

The Missoula Floods, also known as the Missoula Mud Slides, were a series of massive floods that occurred in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States during the last ice age, caused by the repeated failure of ice dams holding back Lake Missoula, a massive glacial lake in present-day Montana. These floods, which occurred between 15,000 and 13,000 years ago, had a profound impact on the region’s geology, carving out the Columbia River Gorge and depositing layers of sediment and soil that now support the fertile vineyards of Washington State.
