The CDA Gourmet Wine Word of the Week – Oak Barrel
Parts of a Barrel:
Truss hoops: These are temporary hoops used during the coopering process to hold the staves together while the permanent hoops are being attached.
Staves: These are the individual wooden planks that form the body of the barrel. They are typically made from oak, but other woods like chestnut or acacia can be used. WWW on episode 204, 3/15/2024
Head: The top and bottom circular pieces of the barrel that enclose the staves.
Bilge: The curved section where the staves meet at the bottom of the barrel.
Hoop: The metal bands that hold the staves together. There are typically two types:
Chime hoops: These encircle the top and bottom of the barrel, where the staves meet the head.
Bilge hoops: These encircle the barrel at its widest point, near the bilge.
Croze: The groove cut into the ends of the staves where they fit together to form the barrel body.
